An Outsider

This picture represents the relationship between Don John and his brother, Don Pedro.  Don Pedro is a Prince, so many people adore and look up to him.  On the other hand, Don John is the illegitimate son of the King, so he does not receive the same treatment as his brother.  Throught the story, Don John only has a few people on his side, while Don Pedro is extremely popular.  Don John is envious of his brother and tries to ruin Don Pedro's reputation.  Don Pedro reaches out to his brother and tries to kindle a relationship, but Don John's jealousy creates a barrier that can not be overcome.  Don Pedro is surprised when he discovers his brother's evilness because he thought that his brother was trying to become closer to him.  In reality, in order for Don John to carry out his plan to destroy his
brother, he has to fake a relationship with Don Pedro and his friends. In this picture, Don Pedro is on the side with the other people, reaching out to his brother, and Don John is all alone on his side, he is also reaching out, but the two sides are unable to connect.

Diary Entry 5: Captured

It was not long after I fled Messina that it was uncovered that I was the mastermind behind the whole scheme.  When Borachio and Conrade were arrested, the Watch knew that I had some involvement in the crime, but they certainly did not know the extent.  After my men were interrogated and they confessed to the crime, the Watch realized that Borachio and Conrad were only my accomplices, and I was the true criminal.  By the time my role was uncovered, I had already left Messina and was on my way to my friend's house in the next town over.  I figured that it would take the Watch some time to figure out my location, so I was not in a rush to get to my destination.  Unfortunately, I underestimated the Watch's ability, and they caught me on my journey.  When I arrived back in Messina, I realized that a lot had happened since I left.  Hero was pronounced dead, Borachio and Conrad were taken to jail, Margaret was cleared of any blame, and a double marriage occurred.  After Hero was found innocent, it was revealed that she did not really die, and she came back and married Claudio.  In a twist of fate, Benedick married Beatrice.  To say the least, it was a busy week in Messina.

Diary Entry 3: Success

Success is mine! I carried out my plan tonight and Claudio and Don Pedro believed the entire situation.  Neither of the men doubted me, and everything went exactly as planned.  Borachio fulfilled his part of the deal and I payed him very well for his services.  Claudio was quick to judge Hero and he told me that he was going to confront her on the altar.  He is a very foolish man to think that an innocent and sweet woman like Hero would be disloyal to him.  Claudio is heartbroken and Hero will be humiliated in front of the whole wedding congregation.  I am filled with joy and excitement for the impending doom that awaits the upcoming wedding.  I do not know what will happen at the wedding, but I do know that it will be filled with confusion, embarrassment, disappointment, and heart break.  After the wedding, Messina will be overflowing with gossip and Leonato and his family will be full of shame.  The possibilities of the consequences of my plan are endless and I love this sense of uncertainty.  As long as everything continues to go as planned, I will not get caught and Hero will never marry Claudio.

Diary Entry 4: Fleeing of Messina

I am on the run.  My two companions, Borachio and Conrad, have just been arrested for lechery by Dogberry and Verges, so I had to flee Messina.  I must continue to get as far away from Messina as possible because I committed a very serious offense.  Right now they are in a daze of confusion trying to sort out the mess that I have created.  My plan is to travel to some of my friends' houses and sleep with them for a few nights, but to continue to stay on the move.  My plan to break up Hero and Claudio would not have been ruined and I would not have had to flee Messina if it wasn't for Borachio's loud mouth.   I paid Borachio extremely well to carry out his duties and although he did everything correctly, he had to go tell Conrad and get caught by the watch.  When I got news of their arrests, I quickly packed my bags and left.  I hope to never return to Messina and to put this whole situation in my past and forget about it.  Although I just started to create a relationship with my brother, Don Pedro, any connection that was created has been destroyed by this situation.

Quote from Buddha

"An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind." - Buddha

Don John is portrayed as an nefarious, jealous, and power-seeking character.  He describes himself as just plain evil.  Don John embodies this quote because of his efforts to break up Hero and Claudio.  Don John presents himself as a friend of Claudio, but in reality, he is working against him.  In Act III, Don John's plan is put into action, and Claudio believes that Hero has been unfaithful.  Claudio becomes distraught and decides that he will confront Hero on the altar, therefore embarrassing her in front of the whole town.  Claudio is not thinking correctly because he is so taken aback by the scene he just witnessed.  As the quote says, Don John is doing more damage to Claudio than a beast could because he is hurting him mentally rather than physically.  Claudio's mental pain is messing with his judgement and he is not thinking his actions through.  Everything is going exactly how Don John and Borachio have planned.  If Don John's plan continues to go smoothly, then he will end up hurting many people.

Letter to Conrad

Dear Conrad,

I am writing this letter to inform you of the plan that Borachio has devised to prevent the marriage of Hero and Claudio.  I am writing this letter because I want to notify you before this plan happens, but I do not know if Borachio or I will see you face to face.  I hope one of us will see you, but if not, once you read this letter come and find me.  So here is the plan: I am going to tell Claudio and Don Pedro that Hero has been unfaithful, and if they want proof, that they are to meet me outside of Hero's room tonight.  Borachio will be set up with Margaret, who will be dressed as Hero, in Hero's chamber and they will sleep with each other.  Earlier today, Borachio made sure that Hero would be out of her room. Tonight I will bring the men outside of her window, and when Claudio and Don Pedro see Margaret and Borachio, the marriage will be canceled!  Whatever you do, do not tell anyone of this plan!  If my plan works, Claudio will feel the pain that I have to deal with everyday.

See you tonight,
Don John

Diary Entry 2: My Father

As I reflect on my current situation as an outcast, a sense of hatred grows inside me towards my father.  I have no title and am not regarded with the same respect as my brother, the Prince, because my father had me out of wedlock.  Although I appreciate the money he has provided for me, I wish that I could have been born within my fathers marriage, so that I could have the title and social status that Don Pedro has received.  My father was a very wealthy king that was loved by many people, but he was married to Don Pedro's mother when I was born.  During this time, it is not uncommon for the royalty to have affairs, but the children that are born out of them are often looked down upon because they are the creations of the king's weaknesses.  This is the type of situation that I was born into, but thankfully my brother has just began to kindle our relationship and he has took me under his wing.  Although I am very grateful to him, I know that I will never be treated like him, and I will always wish that my father didn't have me out of wedlock.
